Why you should monitor your kids online activities

Sunday 25 February 2007 @ 9:59 pm

The situation is getting desperate. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the University of New Hampshire did a recent study that found that 1 in 5 children who regularly use the Internet have been solicited for sex in the past year.

But get this: The same study found 1 in 4 children report being exposed to photos of people having sex, even though about 1/3 of households reported using “Internet blocking software.”

That’s the problem. That’s why keystroke monitoring programs like PC Tattletale have been developed. It’s one of a whole bunch of programs that let parents know just what their kids are doing online. But what I like about this application is it records any and all software programs run, web sites visited, instant messages exchanged and while doing so, does not interfere with normal browsing & won’t slow down your PC like so many other monitoring software programs.

This program offers a VCR-like control & playback function that makes it as simple as clicking the “PLAY” button to watch EVERYTHING your child did when they were online. And if you are away, it can even send you copies of your child’s emails in real time so you’ll know what’s going on even if you’re at the office.

You can try it for free. If you want to buy. It’s $49.

Forget the dish, satellite TV for your PC

Monday 19 February 2007 @ 7:55 am

Forget the roof-mounted dish or the expensive cable connection. Now there’s a way to get 3,000 international satellite TV stations beamed directly to your PC through the Internet. Think of VoIP for satelliet TV. It’s all perfectly legal and involves a $49 program.

You do need a broadband connection for the best audion and video pickup and it works anywhere, picking up stations from Albania to Venezuela. Because the stations are streamed via the Internet, you don’t need any extra hardware or a PC card.

Work from Home and get paid taking surveys

Wednesday 14 February 2007 @ 8:33 pm

The claims are pretty astounding: Making from $5 to $75 by taking online surveys and participating in product testing focus groups. The surveys are generally intended to get your honest opinions on various topics, such as what kind of products you buy, why you choose one product over another, what you think of certain products and how much they cost, how much you spend on various products, etc.

Remember envelope stuffing? This appears to be the high tech work-from-home successor. Thousands are participating in it. I’ve never tried it and I’m sure it’s not going to get you rich quickly. But I looked at the offering of a company called Survey Scout and it sounded like a great way to pick up a few extra bucks without a lot of work. Another suvey company is called PaidSurvey.

Surveys are generally made up of anywhere from 20-50 questions, sometimes multiple choice and sometimes with space for you to add your personal comments, etc. In general, the more time it is expected to take to complete the survey, the more you will be compensated. Some take only 5 minutes, say the companies.

Interesting.

Fixing that pesky Windows Registry

Tuesday 13 February 2007 @ 5:58 pm

If you’ve had your computer for a year or so, chances are, you’ve noticed it starting to slow down. That is NOT necessarily a sign you need to get a new computer or that technology has somehow passed you by – no matter what some computer staore saleepeople would have you believe.

We talked a few days back about getting rid of spyware and adware. Thse are little programs that get installed (usually without your intent) and pop-up promoting products or services. They slow down machines and need to get cleaned out regularly. When I ran an adware removal program through my PC a couple of weeks ago, it found nearly 200 junk programs. With one click I removed them and the computer is like a new machine.

But perhaps even a bigger problem is your Windows registry and the corruption that junkware can do to it. What’s that, you ask? The Windows registry is a central hierarchical database in Windows used to store information necessary to configure the system for one or more users, applications, and hardware devices. The registry contains information that is constantly referenced during operation, such as profiles for each user, the applications installed on the computer, settings for folders and application icons, what hardware exists on the system and which ports are being used. Windows Registry is a vital part of Windows and if it is damaged, your whole system may be corrupted and cannot be used.

Chances are you can rescue and restore top performance to your PC – and even get it ready for Vista if you plan to upgrade the operating system – by using a Windows Registry Repair program. They scan your system and then clean out junk while repairing and optimizing the whole operating system. Before you take your computer into the shop… try a registry repair program. That may be all you need.
